Modernist Swedish Bird Brooch Valsgärde Shield 830 Silver Falcon Pin
Modern in appearance yet ancient in design, is this vintage Swedish bird brooch depicting the mythological Norse bird or raptor of Valsgärde, crafted from 830 Silver and red enameling in 1962.
The modernist brooch features the stylized falcon or bird of prey that was used to decorate armor and shields in the ancient world, and is based on the archeological finds of a 7th century Viking burial site in Uppsala.
The brooch consists of 830 silver and vivid red enameled inlay in a diamond shaped pattern, has a tube hinge and c-catch, measures approximately 1&1/4 inches wide at its widest point by 2&1/4 inches high, and weighs 12.6 grams.
It is also embossed with “Valsgärde Uppsala Sweden Motiv Från Sköld”, “600 - Talet e.Kr.”, and “Shield Ornament 7th Century AD”, and bears the Swedish hallmarks for 830 silver, the maker’s mark of “Stibe”, the lower case letter “u” town mark for Uppsala, the triple crown Swedish assay mark in a “cat’s paw” cartuche, the standard silver mark of the letter “S” for 830 silver or higher, and a date letter of “M9" to indicate 1962.
