Vintage 40s Trifari Jelly Belly Turtle Brooch Sterling & Lucite Tortoise Pin – Alfred Philippe
This handsome vintage jelly belly turtle brooch is a Trifari classic, made of sterling, gold vermeil and clear lucite, and patented by designer Alfred Philippe in 1943.
The vintage 40s Art Deco era tortoise style pin has a sterling silver body covered in a gold vermeil, and plump high domed shell made of a clear prystal lucite cab. The turtle also has green emerald colored rhinestone eyes, and clear faceted rhinestones adorning the neck, flippers, and tail and is a book piece appearing in Brunialti’s “American Costume Jewelry”.
* Note - there are a few scratches on the surface of the lucite cab but doesn’t detract – and the tarnish on the vermeil has been left “as is” in order to preserve it.
The jelly belly brooch measures approximately 1&3/8 inches wide at its widest point by 2&1/8 inches in length, weighs 19.9 grams, and is marked “Trifari” with crown, “Sterling”, and “Des. Pat. No 135170”. See last pic for a copy of the 1943 patent.
