Victorian 14K Gold Brooch Hairwork Memento Mori Pin
A lock of plaited chestnut colored hair was lovingly preserved 162 years ago, in this finely made antique Victorian hairwork mourning brooch, set in 14 karat gold and featuring an inscribed memoriam from 1855.
The beautiful keepsake "memento mori" pin is oval in shape and comprised of unmarked yellow gold (tests as 14K) with decorative rope framing of gold and black enameling, and plaited braid of glossy brown hair beneath a glass oval, with hand engraved inscription in back for “E. P. Knox”, “Obt”, “July 6th 1855”.
It measures approximately 1&1/2 inches wide by 1&1/8 inches top to bottom, has a tube hinge with extended pin stem and c-catch, and weighs 8.5 grams.
