Victorian Jet Cameo High Relief Mourning Brooch Woman & Dove Pin
Large in size and detailed in design, is this lovely antique Victorian mourning jet cameo brooch featuring a high relief carved portrait of a woman with detailed hair and earring, and dove on her shoulder, circa 1870s-1880s.
The finely made mourning brooch was part of a collection at the "Museum of the City of New York", before it was deaccessioned, and consists of a black carved Whitby jet over an oval sized polished plaque of glass with beveled edge -- set over a metal backing, which provides weight.
*Please note that there is an old crack repair at the base of the plaque as shown, with some adhesive evident on the back only. However, the carved jet portrait has no flaws and remains intact.
It measures approximately 2&1/8 inches wide by 2&5/8 inches high, has a gold filled tube hinge and c-catch, and weighs a considerable 73.4 grams.
