Here is a carved and colorful vintage “Iro-Urushi” pin, also known as Camo Bakelite, with striped layers of autumnal colors of orange-red, coffee, chocolate, and butterscotch, circa 1930s/40s.

The petite Art Deco brooch consists of a Japanese layered lacquer, made from the sap of the Staghorn Sumac tree – which has naturally occurring phenols so that it passes chemical testing for Bakelite, although it has a completely different composition and process.

It has an elongated oval shape, measures approximately 1&3/4 inches across, has an embedded metal pinback, and weighs 6.1 grams.
